The Benue State government has hinted that the attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen on various communities in the state have been orchestrated by some powerful individuals.

Since the last general elections the attacks on various communities have increased, leading to the killing of hundreds of persons and the displacement of thousands of others.

Despite the public outcry these killings and attacks have attracted recently, the security agencies appear to be having a hard time preventing further attacks and killings in the state.

Speaking on a radio programme earlier today Special Adviser to Governor Samuel Ortom on Media and ICT,  Mr Tahav Agerzua said “The plan to destabilize Benue State was made in phases. First it was the herdsmen, then this political phase. After they failed with the tool of impeachment, they are calling on the herdsmen tool again.”

However Mr Agerzua did not mention those responsible for these plans nor give further details about the plan.

It will be recalled that 8 members of the Benue state House of Assembly(said to be loyal to Senator George Akume) on Monday broke into the Assembly chambers(while the other members were prevented from entering the Assembly complex by men of the Nigerian Police) and eventually served Governor Ortom an impeachment notice.

According to Mr Agerzua “the impeachment notice served on the governor is of no effect as he is still carrying out his constitutional duties”.

While the presidency has exonerated President Buhari from the current travails of Governor Ortom, it is left to be seen if those responsible for deploying the Police to support the 8 members will be questioned and punished accordingly.
